A Diverse Faculty

My management and research motto is 'THINK BIG and MIND DETAILS': first have a big picture of a problem or a research project; then understand the details of the mechanics for solving a problem or answering a research question. Scholarly management helps our DBA students win in this competitive world.

I always find it intellectually rewarding to teach our DBA programme and interact with the students. In my course of Marketing Strategy, we discuss latest research developments in market orientations, corporate responsibilities, interfirm cooperation and competition, distribution channels, digital marketing, and so on. Students bring their unique insights from their rich industry background. Some further develop these ideas into testable hypotheses and scholarly research.

I enjoy supervising and working with my DBA students on their projects. I also find joy in the process of motivating and mentoring students to explore different ideas and to contribute scholarly knowledge through their DBA theses. Witnessing these contributions is wonderful, and I have successfully supervised over 15 DBA/DMgt students in the past 15 years, mainly with respect to integrating the theoretical work of management information systems and operations management with a theoretical and managerial orientation to enhance the competitiveness and productivity of the industrial and business sectors. The recent research I conducted with my DBA students investigates the effects of flexibility and supply chain agility on firm performance, the role of social capital creation on customer relationship performance, and the effects of e-loyalty programmes and social media marketing activities on brand relationship quality. Working alongside the students on these projects is fascinating.

Teaching DBA / DMgt classes is a demanding yet rewarding experience. These classes are full of established entrepreneurs and senior business executives who will not take academic research studies for granted. Dynamic interactions and heated discussions are the ways to confront and integrate theoretical and scientific analysis with real world business issues. Through such process, we work together to advance our understanding of the value and relevance of theoretical concepts and empirical findings on the one hand, and integrate the rich industrial experiences under unified conceptual frameworks on the other hand. Not only I enjoy so much in teaching and supervising the classes, I also learn and get inspired by them.

Andy YEUNG
My first time experience teaching DBA came with a great surprise – the abilities of students in understanding new theories and solving real-world problems through theoretical frameworks surprised me. DBA graduates have the unique capability to combine theoretical knowledge and practical insights through experience, while it is really not easy for any other people to possess both.
